My name is Julie, I’ve been a registered massage therapist since 2013. Over the past year I’ve been taking several courses through the Mastectomy Guide program, learning how to work with people who’ve had breast and chest surgeries. I’ve always felt strongly that people should have support through their healing - before, during, and after - and breasts have long been an underserved area for care, both through social stigma and awkward lack of knowledge. This feeling was strengthened when I went through my own breast surgery. I had so many questions about what I was experiencing, about what I could do for optimal healing, and there weren’t many answers outside of untrained social media influencers and self-declared health gurus, none of which was backed by studies or research. When my scars started to thicken and tighten, I only had the advice that everyone knew because everyone said - just reef on them and keep going even if it hurts. It felt wrong. And it was wrong. The latest science in scar formation and care shows that a gentle approach makes for better scars and fewer complications. With this new advanced training, I’m hoping to change what everyone knows so that everyone will say: there’s help, there’s relief from the tightness and pain, and it’s gentle.
